Today I want to talk a little about strategic planning. All strategic planning begins with a vision of the future. This can be for your life or for your business. The more detailed your vision the greater the likelihood of attainment. So whenever somebody tells me, “I need a strategic plan.” My first response is always, “To do what?”
Strategic planning is nothing more than deciding how you are going to get from where you are today to your vision of the future state you’re trying to create. This is true for life as well as business. You need to begin with the end in mind. When I help clients through a strategic planning process I use a 9-point methodology. The level of detail is obviously different if the plan is for Coca-Cola versus Bob’s Body Shop. The 9 phases of a strategic plan are:
- Core Values (Guiding Principles)
- Critical Success Factors
- Action Steps
Some of these steps are more critical than others, especially depending on the size and complexity of the organization. I work with many different size organizations. Some have very little money to spend on an outside consultant. For these companies I have developed a Strategic Planning Guide that leads them through the 9-steps so they can develop their strategy on their own. Often they will ask me just to review their plan when it is done. Other companies want more of a hands-on consultative approach. In these cases I work with the organization to help them facilitate the strategic planning process.
I also have some clients that want a vision and strategy for their life. I work with these people on a coaching basis, but the same methodology applies, all the principles are the same.
